Shoot the messenger, stop the press!

I find myself bemused at the constant rattling of people's cages about Wenger not being up for the job. These are the people who called him god 5 years ago.

He has kept us competitive, admittedly without silverware but noone has a god-given right to that. We're not an awful side and we are still in the title race. When did reason forsake many in our society? I'm a passionate fan and I hate losing to anyone, but it happens. Especially this season where its seems the top twelve in the league seem more than capable of beating each other, albeit sometimes in a fortunate manner.

I'm not going to sweep the loss under the rug, its still very much hanging over me, but I'm dealing with it and I see no reason to start shouting at the management. We needed to gamble but the players need to shoulder the burden, they are on the pitch, they need to take the initiative to gamble and get players in the box at any given time.

Direct your constructive criticism at Arshavin for example who was very wasteful, but remember he is hot and cold and we needed him there for a spot of genius, it just didnt happen for him.

  1. Wenger was never a god to me. At best he was a good manager and nothing more. Now, he is crap and I fear that by the time he has finished with us, we would be in the annonimity of mid-table. He was not the first to bring success to Arsenal ... from the sound of some people, you would think that this was the case. In fact most of his success came from the players he inherited from George Graham. He has turned us to Arsenal Trading Co Ltd, where the only thing that mateers is the profit margin

  2. Ahh Good afternoon Mr Anonymous. Certainly I agree we have had varying degrees of success with many managers at Arsenal, to think otherwise would mock Herbert Chapman, Bertie Mee and George Graham.

However, you cannot say the expansive football played in todays Premiership is comparable and George Graham's Arsenal wouldn't compete. Its a different game now and Arsenal have changed to acclimatise.

Yes we have had success in the past and we will have in the future but silverware isn't a given right. The teams this year are better across the board and to consider our position in the league as poor is folly at such an early stage in the season.

We could be top by a mile, but we aren't. We just need to grind out results and we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season and hopefully pick up some silver on the way.

Its not all doom and gloom if you are prepared to look at the positives.

  3. Wenger is a good manager, no doubt abt that.
Bur writer, Do u really think our defense is capable. Why AW is not at all concentrating on defense. Why he is not at all ready to change GK doing mistake regularly.

Finance problem we can understand. But as a professional FC, how much money they need to spend to get a good defender and GK.

    The problem is AW attitude.

If we look at the MU match itself, we can understand the players in the teams know they are not good enough to play against big. Because they were so much nervous in first 30 minutes. And Do you really think MU player a great match to beat us ? Or we didn't play good ?

One of the biggest club in the world fans expects these all ?
And Mr. WG, Do you really think AW is trying to win anything? He is not trying at all. He is just trying to get CL birth only last 5 years.

  4. Wenger's tactic and style was too predictable.
A famous Chinese War Tactician used to say "understand your enemy and know yourself, a hundered battles, a hundred victories"
Gooners hate losing to Man U, Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool. Please get that in your brain, "Balls carrier".

  5. I don't think Squillaci and Koscielny are bad defenders. Its their first season in the premier league and its only Koscielny's 2nd season in top flight football.

Koscielny wasn't bought to start every game, he and Squillaci were bought to supplement Vermaelen and Djourou and both be brought into the Premier League slowly, circumstances however have seen them play a lot more than expected. I can tell you now, Wenger never meant for them to be the first choice pairing for this season.

Koscielny is one of the best 1v1 defenders in the premiership, yes their partnership is vulnerable but it is still young in terms of games.

Now I WISH Wenger would spend twenty million on a Goalkeeper, or a defender, or sod it both!! But he will never do that. He's a coach first and a manager second. He wants to make talent, not buy it.

Thats why Henry was a great player, thats why he helped an aging Arsenal defence play on for year after year.

I certainly feel your frustrations, but we're building a great side and I'd rather be positive than negative, that just leads to the dark side.

As for Wengers style and tactics, Wenger rarely changes his tactics depending on opposition putting his faith in his players to best the opposition playing the way he wants them to play. He's not a tactician like Mourinho, he's a coach first, Manager second.

Thank you both for your excellent comments though, they're insightful and thought provoking which is what we are all here for!
